Balenciaga is pushing its menswear offering: the luxury fashion house has announced that it will be staging a runway show for its menswear collection during the upcoming men’s fashion week in June. At almost 100 years old, this marks a radical new step for the French fashion house which was set up in 1918: even though Balenciaga does produce collections for men each season, this will be the first time the label has ever had a runway show for menswear. The Spring/Summer 2017 show will take place in Paris during the bi-annual men’s fashion week with a date fixed for the 22nd June 2016.

With a recently appointed artistic director, Balenciaga is currently at the beginning of a new chapter of the house’s history and this move can be seen as a continuation of a fresh, new vision for the brand.
Indeed, in October last year Balenciaga made the headlines when it announced that it had made the daring choice of recruiting fashion designer Demna Gvasalia as its new artistic director to replace Alexander Wang. At the time of Gvasalia’s appointment François-Henri Pinault, president and CEO of Kering, called the new recruit: “a powerful emerging force in today’s creative world.”
The young designer – who is also known for his unconventional designs with streetwear influences for fashion label Vêtements – made his debut for Balenciaga at Paris Fashion Week in March with a collection that was well received. He revisited the label’s past, looking to founder Cristóbal Balenciaga’s designs for inspiration, all whilst bringing the collection firmly into the 21st century.

With regards to the upcoming menswear show, one thing is certain: under the direction of a designer that is brimming with bold ideas and challenging the norm, it’s guaranteed that the collection will be far from boring.
