It was undoubtedly the talk of the town at the CES technology tradeshow in las Vegas this week: Mercedes-Benz pioneers the future of the cars with its F015 Luxury in Motion model. The F015 presented at CES is a self-driving car, the first of its kind.

Still only a research vehicle, the F015 already gives a good idea of what autonomous driving will have to offer in years to come. Made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and aluminium, the car uses an electric hybrid system that runs on hydrogen, on which it can cover up to 1,100 kilometers. Sensors are used for safety, allowing it to identify pedestrians for example, and the vehicle features large LED display at rear and front of vehicle which, along with acoustic signals, communicate with the car’s surroundings. In addition, thanks to ‘Extended Sense’ technology, the car knows its exact location down to a millimeter.

The doors open with easy entry into a large and luxurious living environment inside. The vehicle incorporates four lounge seats made of leather, the front two of which can be rotated to either face back towards the other passengers, or forward to take control of the car. Furthermore the car is digitally equipped with six high-resolution screens for passengers to use whilst in motion. The interior is intentionally given a comfortable lounge-like feel, for passengers to feel at total ease.

Talking about the research model, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Head of Mercedes-Benz cars, commented “Anyone who focuses solely on the technology has not yet grasped how autonomous driving will change our society. The car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space,”

Although its still early days yet, Mercedes-Benz has certainly given us a taste of the future with the autonomous F015 concept. And we're glad to see that, aside from being technologically advanced, it's looking but luxurious and stylish.
