Rumours have been flying about over the past couple of weeks and it finally emerged today that fashion designer John Galliano will be joining Maison Martin Margiela as the brand’s new Creative Director.
The news has been confirmed by Only The Brave, the group that owns the Belgian fashion house. President of the OTB group, Renzo Rosso, told WWD, “Margiela is ready for a new charismatic creative soul. John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time.”

Galliano’s career had stayed low key over the past few years after the designer fired from French fashion house Dior - where he had been chief designer since 1996 - in 2011, following a public anti-Semitic outburst. Since then he has worked on a number of small projects, including a three-week stint at Oscar de la Renta earlier this year. This new role marks a strong comeback for the designer as Galliano will be taking charge of all of Margiela’s collections, including Couture.

The appointment of one of fashion’s most flamboyant personalities as creative director of Maison Martin Margiela can be seen as quite a surprise move; the fashion house has previously always been very secretive about the identity of its head designer.
We’ll now have to wait until January 2015 to see what this union will bring, when Galliano will present his first collection for the brand in Paris at Couture Fashion Week.
