The biography of Vivienne Westwood, one of Britain’s most influential fashion designers, was released today.

The book is written by actor and biographer Ian Kelly. As both an authorised biography and a memoir, the book combines a mix of voices. Kelly’s, Westwood’s as well as the voices of people close to the iconic designer all come together to provide an insight into her world. Ian Kelly said of Westwood: “Vivienne is much more than what you first see.”
The biography follows her trajectory from her childhood, to her key role in the punk movement to becoming an internationally recognized high-fashion designer. Amongst other things, it addresses her complicated relationship with Malcolm McLaren, manager of the rock band the Sex Pistols.

The book cover features a portrait photograph taken by renowned fashion photographer Juergen Teller, with whom Westwood has worked with for many years.
The designer is known for her rebellious streak, and the Vivienne Westwood label has become recognisable for its deconstructed tailoring, references to anglomania and its signature orb. In recent years, the 73-year old designer has been awarded an OBE and made a Dame.

On Tuesday, Westwood celebrated the launch of the book with a party in London. Guests included Bella Freud, Jerry Hall and Alice Dellal.

Published by Picador, the book is priced at £25.
